Last year’s 3rd Annual – 2014 Winnipeg Global Fat Bike Day Ride was a blast, with over 50 Fat Bikers joining in on some or all of the biking and social fun! This year’s 4th Annual Ride will be bigger and even more fun!!
Plan to meet at The Forks (Canopy Rink beside the glass Tower Atrium) at 11:00 AM on Saturday December 5th 2015.
No costs … just bing a smile and a helmet of course 🙂
* Btw, we will be obeying all traffic signs on a group ride, though we hope to use as much trail as possible …
After our first Mass-Group ride over the Louis-Riel Esplande Bridge to the shores of the Red River for our group photo, we will ride back to the Forks Riverwalk trail and head west. There will be several options to bike for as little as 1 Hour or over 4 Hours, with coffee/warm-up stops along the way and opt-out points enroute to the Assiniboine Park Duck Pond Shelter and eventually back to the Forks via a special stop-over `Casa` (with chili and suds) for the longer distance riders.

Global Fat-Bike Day … in Winnipeg

Saturday December 6th, 2014 – Meet at the Forks – 11:00 a.m.

All clubs, store riders, fat bike groups (with token skinnies) are welcome.

Loop ride, following the rivers and creeks as much as possible, centered on the Forks, and including a Photo Shoot, Treasure Hunt, a Food Item Deliver Task (FIDT) and Pit Stop (chili and toddies!).

*** 29 Nov Update:  Expect a much shorter route(s) due to the recent arrival of fresh snow and the intent to make this fun and accessible to many! ***

Global Fat Bike Day 2013 in Winterpeg

Today’s challenge in Winterpeg (sometimes called Winnipeg) is that the name often comes true. A couple of days ago, 17cm(6+ inches) of snow fell, with the temperature plummeting a day later. On the drive to the start of the GFBD ride, temperatures were -27C ( -17 F) with wind chill pushing things down to -35C, (it warmed to a balmy -24 at the end).

A surprise for all of us at this time of year. While many chose to snuggle with their significant others, a few brave soles started the ride at 6 a.m. with our usual ride out to Nick’s Cafe and back via the Harte Trail and then the Assiniboine Forest, Park and River edge trails towards the Forks.

A few of us ended at the Forks; home of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Brrrr… ‘Winterpeg’ lived up to is nick name and we fatbikers embraced it!

Lindsay’s 1 Million Kms Celebration Video

Fat Tom K’s Post:

Here’s a little video I made to commemorate Lindsay Gauld’s amazing achievement!
This video tries to capture the day of celebrations, the early morning start, the riding along the way and the hosted event at The Forks put on my Paul Jordan and MC-ed by comedian Peter Jordan.

I had the distinct honor and pleasure to ride out (with ‘FatCory’, Vern N. and ‘FatJason’) to Nick’s Cafe in Headingly this past Saturday morning to link up with others to congratulate Lindsay Gauld on his awesome feat of having cycled over 1,000,000 Kms!  After a little ‘million candled’ cake (courtesy of Vern & Doris N), a group of us made the ride back into town to link up with more riders on the way to the Forks. There, many more riders braved the -25C temps and rode in peleton style to a waiting crowd of enthusiastic supporters.

It was awesome to see the support and appreciation shown by many close friends, fellow cyclists and many Winnipegers! Close friend and faithful ‘man-servant’ Andy Lockery gave a moving speech, as did other hosts and dignitaries! Lot’s of clapping (muffled by big mitts!) and cheering for a REAL CYCLING HERO! WOW … 1 Million Kilometers (to the moon and back and 1/2 way back again)!!

This video includes some nice pics of Lindsay from various local blogsites (Olympia Cycling Club, WinnipegCycleChick and other interwebs) and my own, plus of course my GoPro HD video footage.
