In only itās second year, the Fat Bike Birkie Race has exploded onto the bike racing scene and itās racerĀ limit of 500 is about to be capped!Ā Thanks to some nudges from fellow fatbiker Jason Carter andĀ kind offers ofĀ lodgings on siteĀ from our very own Manitoba cycling legend Lindsay Gauld (and Lynne of course), I am signed up to race (ok, while still mending a bit, I will mostly focus on video capturing this spectacle of fattie racing utopia!) ⦠with 500 fat bikers ā WOW!

It’s Actif Epica video time again … well almost … here’s my Trailer for “Actif Epica 2014 – Meeting The Challenge”.
This year’s 3rd Annual race was even more EPIC than previous years, thanks to plenty of snow and a chilling wind from the north!
Once again, I was sadly sidelined with an injury, but I really enjoyed my now usual role as Roving-Medic-Support-Video guy and starting to work on the video has just re-awakened my awe of the spectacle of racer’s stepping, pedaling and skiing up to Meet the Challenge of this great event! Human Powered Perseverance and Resilience … it’s awesome to see!

Today’s challenge in Winterpeg (sometimes called Winnipeg) is that the name often comes true. A couple of days ago, 17cm(6+ inches) of snow fell, with the temperature plummeting a day later. On the drive to the start of the GFBD ride, temperatures were -27C ( -17 F) with wind chill pushing things down to -35C, (it warmed to a balmy -24 at the end).

A surprise for all of us at this time of year. While many chose to snuggle with their significant others, a few brave soles started the ride at 6 a.m. with our usual ride out to Nick’s Cafe and back via the Harte Trail and then the Assiniboine Forest, Park and River edge trails towards the Forks.

Hi everyone,
It has been over a year for me of not riding after a bad crash at Falcon Lake. It was way to long! I am looking to start back with some snow shoeing (trail building) and some winter single track riding. Bur Oak should be easy to keep packed with myself and a few friends out there weekly ā the more traffic the better it is!
My bigger goal for the winter is to pack and build the winter single track at Grand Beach. I can only imagine how fun and beautiful the Grand Beach single track trail system will be! I canāt make it out often enough to snow shoe and pack the trails. I am hoping Manitoba Fatbikers can get it done together.
Please share your thoughts š

Anyone up for a ride? There might even be snow !!!!! I was thinking of exploring the trails in the Assiniboine Forest.

Wednesday night fat tire rides are gearing up again (no you donāt need a fat bike to join these rides, you just need to ride at a fat bike pace). What you do need to participate in these rides is the willingness to have some fun and some lights because it gets dark pretty darn early. For tomorrowās ride weāll meet in the parking lot in the Northwest corner of the park (like last year) at 7:30 and bomb around the trails of Ass forest and park.

I have been riding the Pugster on trails this summer and having a blast. I recently have done Bur Oak in Birdshill for a few laps and had a blast. I will be likely going this Saturday Sept 21 for a multi lap adventure on the fat bike. I will go anyways , but thought it would be cool to get a few fat bikes out. Maybe meet in the parking lot at 8am. I plan on doing laps for the whole morningĀ in case I do the End Tombed race coming up. Hope to see some of my winter friends out there. If you donāt have a fat bike just come anyways.

I look to Lindsay to add a reality check on what we are all thinking.

see map. Ā 29.5 kms. Ā stage from Stead. Ā takers? Ā anyone with a new bikeā¦sayā¦moonlander orā¦9 zero 7?

Fat KC’s Post:
another ride proposal (tho most ā all of you are sick of the white stuff): stage from Sandbar Inn (Polar Bear staging area) and ride trail system to Birchwood Inn (or not) for lunch. Ā should be ~40 kms return. Ā ā¦this Saturday or Sunday. Ā I have no idea re: trail conditions; am thinking they should be doable. Ā these are closed Snoman trails tho there might likely be the odd hardcore guy out there. Ā takersā¦.
Fat KC’s Post:
Anyone riding? Ā I have a rare Wednesday evening off.
