It’s 2015 Fat Bike Birkie Race Time! :-)

Last year’s Fat Bike Birkie Race weekend was a blast and racing with 535 Fat Bikers was super cool!
Capturing it with this video was all part of the fun …

Rumour has it there may be as many as 800 this year … oh yah – good times ahead!! 🙂

The Assiniboine Park and Forest trails were super hard-packed and not a lot of snow base … great conditions for our friend Skinny Charles to join the Fatties for part of the ride.
Welcome to new fatbiker Pat on her shiny-new 9 Zero 7. Thanks to Fat Serge for suggesting the ride. 1st place Frosted Beard honours to Fat Luke, with a close 2nd place to Charles. Big thanks to Fat David for bailing me out after my Mr. Moonie’s bottom bracket seized up! 🙂

Video Time: Fat Biking Winter Groomed Trails

Looking back at a great day of fat biking on the winter trails at Grand Beach Provincial Park in Manitoba, Canada.

These are multi-use winter trails (Park designation) that are groomed for classic and skate XC skiing. Others use the trails as well (hikers and snowshoers, but they can mark up the trails).
We fat bikers with our wide tires (3.7 inches minimum up to 4.8 inches) and low tire pressure (below 10 PSI is advised) can ‘float’ on the firm-ish packed trails and cruise along at speed, while having great control (good grip).
As long as we stay off the set classic ski tracks, avoid the trails once it’s warmer (near O C) and ride in a smart courteous way, we can enjoy the trails and not conflict with others on the trails, especially the skiers. Our speed is very compatible with good skate skiers, while the classic skiers are much slower, so give a friendly warning as you approach them (just like skate skiers have to).

Groomed winter trails can be a blast for us fat bikers, as long as we use them correctly and with good trail etiquette! Remember though that while access to these trails may be allowed at this time and at this location (a Provincial Park – not a private ski trail location), this access could be lost. So … 3.7 inch minimum width tires, keep the pressure low and avoid the trails if they are warm/soft!

2014 Global Fat Bike Day in Winnipeg, Canada – It was a SUPER BIG FATTIE Blast!!!

It all started at The Forks in the Heart of Winnipeg – where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers join and our adventures begun.  45+ riders joined Winnipeg’s GFBD Ride at some point along the way.

First we crossed the Red River via the Riel Esplanade Foot Bridge.GFBD in Winnipeg 2014 - 9 GFBD in Winnipeg 2014 - 13

Time for a revival?

Fat Cory’s Post:

Just seeing if anyone is still alive here. Anyone for a fattie ride on November 5th ?

  1. Yo Cory. Fattie season is upon us and yes we need to gather the herd soon. Unfortunately, I have plans on the Nov 5th, so no go for me, but I’m sure fatties will be a rolling …

  2. We’re planning a Fat Tire Bike ride for Tuesday at Grand Beach for 09:30.

  3. I would love to, but I am going to spend a lazy day with my girls. What is on the radar for this weekend?

  4. Heading out to Riding Mountain National Park (Whirlpool Lake) for a little camping and a whole lot of Fat Tire Actif Epica secret training

  5. I just got back from there

  6. Any snow out there?

  7. We did Reeve’s on Saturday. There was just the odd skiff here and there. All the mud at the bottom was frozen. The stream is still flowing pretty good. A non issue if you have water proof boots. There are some ice covered rocks you can inch across . We did the loop. I was really suggesting shuttling to avoid the climb back up.
We hit Brandon Hills on Sunday. Same conditions snow wise.

  8. Thanks for the info. We’re hoping to do Reeve’s as well. Did you do the road, Gorge Creek or Reeve’s in reverse on the way back up? There was a couple of cm’ s worth of snow coverage at Grand Beach today. More snow coming the next few days.

  9. We did full Reeve’s loop, then climbed to Jet junction.

  10. Ken can you email me?

  11. Check your email Cory.

  12. I did, and I sent you a reply. I just resent in case it was stuck in lala land.

  13. I am assuming you never got my email this time either? I am getting yours. Maybe my replies are going to your trash?
Anyhoo I was wondering how Whirlpool went? I had some questions. Is there still wood there to burn? Is the out house still open? Is the shelter still open? How was the road into Whirlpool?

  14. Nope, not getting your emails??? A tad too much snow to do Reeve’s. Went as far as we could on the North Escarpement. Firewood freshly stocked up at Whirlpool Lake. The out house stays open year round. Heated seat inoperative. The shelter at Whirlpool Lake is somewhat winterized (the 2 stoves help) The road in was snow covered bit doable.

Tues Oct 8, 2013 Ride

Fat Cory’s Post:

Ok lets rattle these branches again. I am riding anyways but company would be nice 😉 Let’s meet at the Forks at 6pm  and ride Whittier, then cut across to the Church Hill drive single track, then back to the Forks for a carb refuel. The west enders can meet at my place and ride out on Cornish path. Bring lights , a sense of humour , and money for beer.

Grand Beach Fat Bike Throw Down #3: Even More Awesome in Pictures!

Tom Kolesnik's avatarFat Tom K Productions

Ok, so there are manyothersuperlatives that I could use to describe how AWESOME this past Sunday’s Throw Down #3 was, but hey, #1 was Awesome, #2 was More Awesome and yes, #3 was Even More AWESOME!

Our happy herd (think Big Fat Manitoba Bisons!) of 9 fatties started even earlier in the morning, due to rising spring temps, but in the end conditions turned out to be stellar!

We cruised the Grand Beach ski trails on our low-pressure fat tires and only left dimple marks behind!
The XC skiers we met and shared our potluck feast with were unanimous in their awe at how smoothly we floated on the packed snow trails and marveled at how cool are bikes are … “you can’t ride a fat bike without smiling“!

Fri Night Fat Bike Trail Ride – Picture Perfect!

Tom Kolesnik's avatarFat Tom K Productions

With snow melting temperatures on the way, this past Friday night’s trail ride at Assiniboine Park and Forest was billed as a last chance for us Winnipegger fat bikers to  trail ride on snow.  Today the snow is melting and our prediction is coming true.
So, how was Friday night’s ride? … Picture Perfect!Fat Bike Night Ride 4 Apr 14 - Handle Bar As you can see by these screen caps and the smiles on all ten of our faces (while riding and as we relaxed at Joe Black’s Café) after 2 & 1/2 hours of cruising pathways and carving up snow packed single track!  Good times and worth of a snappy video.   But for now, check out the gallery:

Grand Beach Fat Bike Throw Down #2: More awesomeness in pictures!

Tom Kolesnik's avatarFat Tom K Productions

Well, since we had such a blast cruising our fatties on the rolling Grand Beach trails on Throw Down #1, we headed back out there this past Sunday for Throw Down #2 … upping the ante with a potluck feast after!  Fatbiking and Bacon … they just seem perfect together!  It was a bit warmer; so we started sooner to maximize the firm snow conditions and all was well.
All was well that is … until we were ‘photo ambushed’ by Greg McNeill.
Sorry guys, ‘sneaky’ Greg got me to give up our trail secrets.

Video Time – 2014 Fat Bike Birkie – A Racer’s View

WOW!!! The 2014 Fat Bike Birkie Race held a Cable, Wisconsin, USA, on March 8th was the BIGGEST FAT TIRE RACE ON THE PLANET and the US National Fat Bike Championship, with over 535 registered racers (3/4s on the 47 Km loop and the rest on a 20 Km loop), including 100 women!
It was a blast to race and capture the event on video … like a kid in a big fat candy store! 🙂
Fat Tire Biking is exploding around the world and no where was it more evident than this past weekend at the Birkie Ski Trails complex, with just 2 days access for fat bike racers to check out the amazing trails, in perfect conditions (-10C overnight and -5 max at race end), expertly groomed by the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation and all their organizers and volunteers!
Everything about the weekend, from hosting, coordination, facilities, accommodations options, restaurants and after race party local hang out and the sea of sponsors was superb!
Thanks to Jason Carter for being a great travel and racing partner, to Lindsay ‘The Legend’ Gauld (who won the 60+ age category) and his wife Lynne (who stepped up to be my roving videographer) for hosting J and me in their sweet cabin!  I rode 3 minutes (downhill) to the race start from their digs – nice 🙂
Can’t wait to come back next year!

  1. David Cobb says March 15, 2014 at 22:14

Awesome Tom, loved the footage. Do you guys get together here in Winnipeg at all? Looking for a group to ride with.

  2. Thanks David. Sorry I didn’t see your comment sooner. Definitely ways to connect with Fat Bikers (our MB Fat Biker’s were irregular this year with weekly rides for a variety of reasons).
It’s not to late to head out to Grand Beach Prov Park tomorrow (23 March) on the trails for an unofficial race/ride (10:00 AM start at the ski trail head). Jason Carter is organizing and I’m helping. Anyone with a fat bike is welcome! 🙂
